If your child has been diagnosed with nearsightedness (or myopia), you may have noticed a familiar pattern. Each year, their prescription gets a little stronger. Many parents assume that’s just the normal progression of myopia, but it doesn’t have to be.

At ClearSight EyeCare, we offer myopia management in Tazewell and Lebanon to help families protect their children’s vision. Instead of only correcting eyesight, these treatments are designed to slow the progression of myopia over time. In this post, we’ll explain what myopia management is, when to start, and the treatment options available.

What is myopia management?

Myopia is a condition where the eye grows too long from front to back, causing distant objects to appear blurry. It often begins in childhood and can continue to progress as children get older. While standard glasses and contact lenses correct blurry distance vision, they don’t slow how quickly myopia changes over time.

Myopia management is a proactive, clinically guided approach that uses evidence-based treatments to help slow that progression. This is important because higher levels of myopia are linked to increased risk of conditions like retinal detachment, glaucoma, and cataracts later in life. Identifying and managing myopia early can help protect long-term eye health.

When should you start myopia management?

The most effective window for myopia management is during the years when the eyes are growing most rapidly—typically between the ages of 7 and 10.¹ Research consistently demonstrates that children who begin treatment earlier experience greater slowing of progression compared to those who start in adolescence.²

That said, myopia management is appropriate at any stage of progression. Teenagers can still benefit from treatment, especially if you are trying to stabilize a prescription that has been changing quickly.

Signs your child may be developing myopia

Vision changes in children can be subtle, and early signs are easy to miss without knowing what to look for. Here are some common indicators that your child may be developing myopia:

  • Squinting to see the board at school or distant objects
  • Sitting very close to the TV, tablet, or phone
  • Complaining of headaches or eye strain, especially when looking far away
  • Holding books or screens unusually close to their face
  • Struggling to track a ball during sports or outdoor play
  • Losing focus or interest in distance-based activities

If you’ve noticed any of these signs, a pediatric eye exam is the best way to understand what’s going on and protect your child’s vision early.

What treatment options does ClearSight EyeCare offer?

One of the things we love about myopia management is that there’s no one-size-fits-all approach. We offer several proven treatment options so we can find the best fit for your child’s age, lifestyle, and prescription.

Stellest® lenses

Stellest® lenses are specially designed glasses lenses that correct your child’s vision while also signaling the eye to slow its growth. Clinical studies have found that Stellest lenses can slow myopia progression by an average of 71% compared to single vision lenses when worn consistently.³ They look just like regular lenses, making them an ideal option for younger kids who may not be ready for contacts yet.

MiSight® 1-day contact lenses

MiSight® lenses are soft daily contact lenses clinically proven to slow myopia progression. They’re a great fit for active kids who want the freedom to play sports or go through their day without worrying about glasses.

Orthokeratology (ortho-k)

Ortho-k lenses are worn overnight and gently reshape the cornea while your child sleeps, meaning they wake up able to see clearly all day without glasses or daytime contacts. Families love this option for the added convenience it brings.

Low-dose atropine eye drops

These nightly prescription eye drops have strong clinical research supporting their effectiveness and can be used on their own or paired with another treatment for even better results.

Multifocal glasses and contact lenses

Multifocal designs—available in both glasses and contact lenses—work similarly to Stellest® and MiSight® by helping reduce the signals that drive eye growth. We’ll help you choose the option that best fits your child’s needs and lifestyle.

How we determine the best myopia management plan

At ClearSight EyeCare, we begin with a comprehensive eye exam to understand your child’s vision in detail. We consider their prescription changes, family history, and lifestyle factors so we can recommend the most effective treatment plan.

Then we keep a close eye on progress with regular follow-ups, adjusting the plan as your child grows. We’re in this with you for the long run.

Let’s talk about your child’s vision

If your child’s prescription keeps changing, or you’ve noticed signs of nearsightedness, our experienced eye doctors in Tazewell and Lebanon offer proven myopia control methods to slow or even stop progression. The sooner a management plan is in place, the more we can do to protect their vision as they grow.
